The Brothers of Sutton’s Hospital of the Charterhouse (21 October 2007)

 These headstones each bear  8 names of the Brothers who are buried together in each grave. To date 28 headstones have been found and the names are still being researched.

 

Westwood Monument ( 6 October 2006)

One of the largest in the cemetery Joseph Westwood lived at Tredegar House in the Bow Road. Originally working at the Thames Iron Works Orchard Place, Blackwall. He left in 1850b with Baillie and Campbell to start their own firm Westwood Baillie in Cubitt Town.

John Northey (21 December 2004)

Headmaster of the National Parochial Schools of St Anne's Limehouse from 1871 to 1878 and was drowned in the wreck of the Princess Alice excursion steamer on the Thames 3rd September 1878 aged 42 years

 

Clara Grant (17 November 2005)

Clara Grant came to Bow when she was offered the post of Head Teacher at the Infants School in Devons Road. She retired after 25 years service and had been a pioneer in primary school methods of teaching and set up the Fern Street Settlement. She is best remembered for her Saturday Morning bundles when children small enough to walk under a wooden arch, paid a farthing for a pacel which could contain anything from old clothes to broken toys.  

 

The Francis Family Vault (21 October 2007)

Charles Francis was a corn merchant and was one of the directors and founder members of the Cemetery and erected this red polished granite  monument to his wife Ann who died 22 February 1859 aged 76. On the side facing east, a missing brick in the wall of the monument allows the rising sun to shine through  illuminating a wrought iron cross in an iron door on the west side.

Captain John Chrystal (21 October 2007)

Many inscriptions in the cemetery commemorate those who have died elsewhere. Captain John Chrystal who died and was buried at sea February 4th 1908 Lat. 20o 45'O.S. Long 77o 16'O.W. in his 63rd year.

Will Crooks and Elizabeth Crooks Adamson (21 October 2007)

The plague on this granite headstone was replaced with funding from Tower Hamlets Council. Will Crooks was elected the first Labour Mayor of Poplar and went on to become a member of parliament for East Woolich
